Community Meeting
Community Meeting plays a vital role in bringing the school together twice a week. It provides a space for students, teachers, and outside guests to speak about important world and local issues, allows the community to become aware of social topics and devise ways to take action, and gives artists and musicians an opportunity to share their talents. Students also learn to present projects, ask and answer questions with self-assurance in front of their peers, and participate as members of an audience. Community Meeting allows students to bring their ideas and voices to their community, practice skills they will use in the workforce, and encourages them to be critical thinkers who consider multiple perspectives. At times, we debrief and continue these important discussions in advisory, fostering deeper engagement and reflection.
The program is integral to the school’s curricula, fostering student leadership and collaboration. Community Meeting is entirely run by students, mentored by faculty, offering them the chance to organize content, lead the all-school assembly, manage all technology, and recap each meeting. After every Community Meeting, students compile and send a school-wide communication, ensuring everyone stays informed and engaged with the topics discussed. Through this process, students not only build practical leadership and communication skills but also develop confidence that will serve them well beyond the classroom, empowering them as future leaders in their communities.
